Frequently Asked

Do I need any experience to start?
Absolutely not! Most of our students start with zero martial arts experience. Our Fundamentals program is specifically designed for complete beginners, and our coaches are experts at guiding new students through their first classes.
What should I bring to my first class?
For your first class, just bring comfortable athletic clothing (shorts and a t-shirt work great), a water bottle, and flip-flops for walking around the gym. We have Gi rentals available if you want to try training in a traditional uniform.
How long is each class?
Kids classes are typically 45–60 minutes, teens classes are 60 minutes, and adult classes range from 60–90 minutes depending on the session. This includes warm-up, technique instruction, drilling, and optional live training (sparring).
Is BJJ safe? Will I get injured?
BJJ is one of the safest martial arts to practice. We emphasize controlled training, tap early and often, and match training partners appropriately. Beginners are never forced to spar until they're ready, and our experienced coaches ensure a safe training environment for everyone.
How much does membership cost?
We offer various membership options to fit different schedules and budgets. The best way to learn about our pricing is to come in for a free trial class, tour our facility, and discuss your goals with us. We'll help you find the perfect membership option.

The fastest way to get a real answer

If you have a question that isn't covered above — pricing, scheduling around shift work, whether your kid is too young, what happens if you have an old injury — phone or email us directly. Coach Ryan replies to every inquiry personally, usually the same day. Phone (519) 301-5059 reaches the academy during open hours and rolls to voicemail otherwise; email info.woodstockbjj@gmail.com is checked daily and gets a reply by the next training day at the latest.

What happens after you submit the form

Your message lands directly in our inbox — there's no automated drip sequence and no sales-call follow-up. A real person reads every submission, replies with a personal answer, and (if you asked about trying a class) sends you the GymDesk link to book whichever session works for your schedule. From there your first class is on us with no obligation; you can take a few days to think about membership without anyone chasing you.

If you'd rather just stop by

You're welcome to drop in unannounced during regular hours. Watch a class from the lobby, ask whatever questions you have, meet some of the students. There's no pressure to sign anything that day — most of our members took at least one walk-through before booking a trial. Coach Ryan and the lead instructors are usually around 15 minutes before each class starts.

Serving Woodstock and the surrounding area

We draw students from across Oxford County — Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, Norwich, Embro — plus regulars commuting in from Brantford, London, Stratford, and Kitchener-Waterloo. The academy is centrally located with parking on-site and easy highway access. If you're considering BJJ in southwestern Ontario and want a serious academy with relaxed culture, we're worth the drive.
